Mzungu, a word that has been unmissable in
my time here. Every time I walk through town I hear a chorus of "mzungu" being called out to me. Each group of kids I pass call out mzungu, laugh and point at me. I feel like a rare bird spotted in an unexpected place.
Today whilst jogging a two-year old boy
ran up to me and quickly poked me with his finger – as if to see
whether I were real or maybe it was to have touched a mzungu.
Last week we waved to a girl on the back of
her father’s bicycle. As we came a little closer she burst out
crying, her eyes wide with fear. Her father explained, this is the first time
that she has seen a mzungu. We tried to comfort the young girl “We are the same as you, don't be afraid” but she would not have us come
near her.
See if you can spot the mzungus below....
but the language is not swahili is it? mzungu is a swahili word I thought...
