Malawian cuisine is not my favorite- nsima
(maize flour), a few vegetables and meat. I have eaten it once with local goat
and chicken. It felt a bit wrong, I was eating goat while surrounded by goats
(see photo).
Besides trying Malawian cuisine, Noortje
and I have had the possibility to do quite some culinary adventures while here.
It is often a question of what the supermarket in Mzuzu (about 30 minutes from
our town) has to offer – read: what has been imported form South Africa by
truck and still looks good. However, with the local fruit and vegetable market
and the plethora of fresh fruit and vegetables we have been enjoying the
delicious fresh produce. In addition, Noortje and I have been making our own
yoghurt, bread, muesli. In short, we have all but started a food blog.
We have been able to share these culinary
adventures at our weekly “mzungu dinners” with other white volunteers and when
inviting Dr. Anneke Snoep, the tropical medicine doctor with whom we are
interning and her family over for dinner. Sometimes followed by a nice game of
“bao” the local game with our Malawian roommate.
food looks great! did you guys get a chance to try any of my recipes?
